Dunkeld & Birnam Water Efficient Village?
Following on from the success of our water efficiency events in Dunkeld and Birnam back in March, Scottish Water and our delivery partner Home Energy Scotland (HES) are working with the Climate Café and are coming back for Unplugged week!
We’ve had the driest summer for years and you might be aware that Scottish Water has asked for customers to use water wisely across the country. This shows that although it seems like it rains a lot in Scotland, water is a precious resource. By working together to use water wisely come rain or shine, we will help protect future water supplies and keep more water in the natural environment.
The water that is supplied to Dunkeld and Birnam comes from the River Tay. A lot of energy goes into pumping the water from the river to the treatment works in Perth, treating the water and then pumping it all the way up to Dunkeld and Birnam. In fact, almost 88 tonnes of CO2e comes from energy used treating and delivering the clean, fresh drinking water that is used in Dunkeld and Birnam every year.
As well as helping to reduce emissions and keeping more water in the natural environment, an average family of 4 can save up to £100 on their energy bills by reducing the amount of hot water they use. Come along to the talk and water efficiency events during Unplugged week to find out more.
We’ve had such a great response from the community in Dunkeld and Birnam, we would like to build on this enthusiasm and use Dunkeld and Birnam as one of our exemplar towns for water efficiency, alongside the other local initiatives.
Between Unplugged 2018 and Unplugged 2019, we’re challenging Dunkeld and Birnam to save 1,000,000 litres of water*. That is equivalent to saving approximately 2.9 tonnes of CO2e. You can keep track of your progress every month by looking for our barometer in The Bridge.
Have you got your Water Saving Pack yet? Why not come along to:
• Summerfest Sunday 2nd September, The Field, Brae Street, 3-6pm
• Birnam Arts of Wednesday 5th September, 11am-6pm

** CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) = a standard unit for measuring carbon footprints for all greenhouse gases in terms of CO2 that would create same warming.

#DBUnplugged
Berlin 2018
I just wanted to say a huge thank you to the community for making it possible to go on my amazing trip to Berlin, To Al Gore’s Climate Reality Course and for always supporting my actions. At the course there were many presentations from many amazing people including Al Gore himself who did a two-hour presentation which nearly had everyone in tears! There were also breakout sessions where you got to go and listen to something which in the description seemed to your liking and something that you were interested in, in my case that was a presentation on connecting with the youth and involving them and also how to communicate with an audience and how not to be boring really!
There were also panels up debating issues we face. For example, as we were in Berlin, one panel debated mining towns and how people’s homes are being destroyed. It was honestly the most amazing, inspiring experience I will have in my whole life and I will forever be grateful for that. I have lots of hopes for the future and lots of ideas to hopefully do in the future.
I would also like to praise Jess Pepper who is truly amazing and is always organising more great things for Dunkeld and Birnam to be involved in. I would of never been able to make this possible without her.
Thank you again,
Ruby Flatley
Unplugged For Under 14s!
If you are inspired by Ruby’s efforts to take more action on climate change, there are lots of events through Dunkeld & Birnam Unplugged where you can get inspiration, get informed and get involved.
As well as baking for Cakes for Commuters, Ruby is creating opportunities particularly for children and young people to get involved through the week.
Everyone is invited to contribute to a wishing tree with their hopes for the future in the Beatrix Potter Garden at Birnam Arts or joining a harvest supper and film evening for P7-S2 pupils where everyone will cook and enjoy a harvest meal with fresh, local ingredients with a film - thanks to support from the youth club and the field. The Big Birthday at Big Apple Day and Summerfest will be filled with all the usual fun and games for all ages too!
Ruby will do her first Climate Reality talk on Tuesday 4th September at The Taybank.
