For years there have been various and collaborative efforts to bring our Dunkeld & Birnam Station back to life. With challenges to overcome on ownership of the Station, who holds the lease and owns the land - Network Rail, Scotrail, Perth & Kinross Council are all players - communications have often bounced between them.
In August, there was a breakthrough to enable progress. John Swinney MSP brought key organisations together to start working towards a good outcome for the community and all who might use or visit the Station. By bringing responsible and relevant organisations together, including Network Rail, Scotrail, Transport Scotland, PKC and Historic Environment Scotland, it could be possible to secure a safe future for the building, improved access and a solution for the platform.
Responsible bodies have been asked to clarify where responsibilities lie and to assess the state of the building, identify what needs done and how long it will take to bring it into good condition. Local attendees were asked to share at the next meeting what a positive outcome for community use might look like.
What next..
With an invitation to present a distillation of ideas for a community vision for the Station at the next session convened by John Swinney MSP, this is an opportunity for relevant public bodies to get an idea of what our community vision would be for the Station - and to get their support.
After years of discussion, chats on the platform, across the village, and most recently through the ‘Dunkeld & Birnam Station Action Group’ facilitated by Nikki Herbertson, there are lots of ideas and hopes about what this community would like to see at a Dunkeld & Birnam Station that works for everyone.
With involvement across the community, hopefully it will be possible to shape and share an outline proposal, from what is known already and your contributions now.
Watch out for updates on posters, social media, for information on pop up Station chats and next steps. There are also boxes in local shops and Cafés to gather input. Please get in touch if you, your group or business would like to be more involved.
All welcome to community update - Birnam Arts, Tuesday 24th October 7.30pm.
An informal group from across the community has come together to respond to this opportunity - for more info contact: Lachlan MacEwan, Nikki Herbertson, Jess Pepper, Mike Silburn or Garth Ponsonby - dunkeldbirnamstation@gmail.com
