Niel Gow Festival tuning up for 18th year - To celebrate 18th century Scottish fiddle legend Niel Gow The 18th Niel Gow Festival is returning with an unmissable programme of exceptional musicians performing, teaching and sessioning in venues across Dunkeld and Birnam.
Preparations are well underway for the 18th Niel Gow Festival with an exciting programme of local talent and world class musicians gathering to celebrate the life and works of one of Scotland’s trad musical legends, Niel Gow. This music festival will be happening across multiple venues in Dunkeld and Birnam between 17th and 19th March and will showcase some of Scotland!s best fiddle and trad music with concerts, sessions, workshops and more.
One of the most famous founders of Scottish fiddle music, Niel Gow, born in 1727, lived in the nearby village of Inver and played across Scotland throughout the 18th century, including entertaining Robert Burns and the Duke of Atholl. His compositions aplenty have influenced all those who have come since in Scotland and beyond, with his music celebrated and played by trad musicians across the world.
Back for its 18th year, the festival has unveiled an exciting programme for 2023 which features some well known names like Charlie McKerron (Capercaillie, Session A9), Patsy Reid (Breabach, Lyre Lyre); Rua MacMillan (Blazin! Fiddles) as well as up and coming players from across Scotland and beyond.
CONCERTS - The weekend will be jam packed with six exciting concerts held in Birnam Arts, tickets available from Birnam Arts Website.
WORKSHOPS – tuition blocks for fiddle, mixed instrument and cello. Participants will be able to sign up to weekend blocks of workshops, Feis-style, and will benefit from tuition from top musicians over the course of the weekend.
STALLS – a pop up craft fair and exhibition will be held upstairs in Birnam Arts on Saturday.
SESSIONS – join in or listen to the sessions in pubs across Dunkeld, some say it!s the best part of the festival!
MORE - throughout the weekend there will also be guided walks, stalls and activities for children across the picturesque Dunkeld and Birnam villages.
The Dunkeld Community Archive will also be open on Friday and Saturday exhibiting items relating to our local musical legend.
Special for 2023 we will also have the album release performance of music by Iain Fraser celebrating the 19th century multiple emigration from Clachtoll to Waipu, New Zealand, via Cape Breton & Melbourne which was led by the Rev Norman McLeod & his followers.
