The Birnam Reader
The Birnam Reader is Perthshire’s newest independent bookshop where you can browse through over 5000 secondhand books and classical music CDs, as well as enjoying freshly ground coffee and homemade cake. When we (Frazer and Beth) planned the Birnam Reader we had in mind our idea of a perfect secondhand bookshop. For us that means having the feel of a new bookshop, without the fustiness often associated with secondhand books. A place where every book is carefully chosen to be a worthwhile read, in great condition and affordable, so that you can try new authors or explore new interests. A place where you can just browse and relax, even at 7pm on a cold winter evening. Thus the Reader was born; Frazer hand selects books for quality and condition, coffee and tea is sourced from a local artisan coffee roaster and the home baked cakes have a twist so as to hopefully be as intriguing as the books. Dragonshead Stout Chocolate Cake anyone?
To tempt you even more, we have our “Birnam Bundle” where you can try a little of everything; a drink, a cake and any one of our £2 books (of which there are many) for just £5! We have plenty of fiction and poetry to choose from, and a wide range of non fiction ranging from history and politics to biography and the arts. We also have specialist and academic books in areas, such as philosophy, psychology, theology and literary and cultural theory. The CDs equally cover a wide range of styles from medieval to contemporary classical composers and everything in between.
We are currently open 11am - 7pm Friday to Monday, but keep an eye on our Facebook page for when we will move to 6 days a week. Also for details of exciting author events coming soon…
