Dunkeld & Birnam twinning project with Asheville, NC is progressing. We have a ‘Dunkeld and Birnam Friends of Asheville, NC’ group currently exploring possible avenues of connection. Please take a look www.facebook.com/DunkeldBirnamAsheville. At the close of the year, two representatives from Asheville Sister Cities sent us the letter below. Fiona Ritchie, firstname.lastname@example.org
Greetings to our friends in Dunkeld and Birnam, On behalf of the Asheville Sister Cities program and the Asheville area community we are pleased to convey to you our continuing interest in establishing a twinning partnership between our communities. Many of you know that this has been an ongoing effort as we have visited your wonderful setting on several occasions that included receptions and personal contacts.
There is a growing interest in developing this sister city relationship drawing upon our many common characteristics and interests: the considerable Scottish ancestral roots throughout the Southern Appalachians; parallel economic characteristics such as art, music, recreation and tourism; the striking physical beauty of our two settings; education; health affairs including an holistic approach to wellness; a strong sense of community ; the Presbyterian heritage; and, an abiding love of nature and commitment to stewardship of the surrounding physical environment.
We hope that 2016 brings opportunities to further build these ties leading to exchanges that enrich the lives of all our citizens. We can assure you that there is significant interest throughout our community in visiting your Perthshire setting, as well as hosting many of you to Asheville, and developing a long-term twinning relationship.
With all best wishes for the season and the New Year, Rick Lutovsky, Past President of Asheville Sister Cities Doug Orr, President Emeritus Warren Wilson College and the Asheville Chamber of Commerce and Co-Author with Fiona Ritchie of Wayfaring Strangers: The Musical Voyage from Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia.
