Autumn is now in full swing! Our NTS properties have transformed from being awash of bright greens to golds, oranges and reds as the leaves fall to the ground like confetti. Not only is this time of year amazing for scenery, it is also a great opportunity to spot different types wildlife! Join our Ranger events to make the most of this season:
We begin this month with something for anyone under the age of 5 years- our ‘Autumn Art’ session on 4th October (11am-12 noon) is a great chance to get crafty outdoors. We will make out own leaf crowns and pine cone creatures from materials found in the forest. There will even be time to search for the ‘Stickman’ who we will learn about during story time.
Our ‘Squirrel Scampers’ event on 10th October (10.30am-12.00 noon) to learn more about these amazing mammals, what they eat, where they live and how to find them. This is the perfect opportunity to catch a glimpse of squirrels at the Hermitage whilst they gather food for the winter months. You can even help them out by making your own squirrel feeder!
Later this month, we will guide you through the Fascinating world of Fungi on October 12th (10.30am to 12.30pm). You will be shown helpful hints and tricks to learn how to identify fungi into their different family groups and have a chance to do some picking of your own to see what you can find in the Hermitage woods.
Want something a little different? Then why not travel up to Killiecrankie on 18th October to learn all about the Battle of Killiecrankie. This afternoon session (2pm-4pm) will give you the chance to help re-enact the Battle, handle replica weapons and see key battle locations with gruesome tales. At the end of the month, ghoulish happenings descend on the Hermitage as we invite you all to join our Halloween Trail on Saturday 28th October! If you solve the gruesome clues and grisly questions hidden around the woodland you will can rummage for a Trick or Treat from the lucky dip. But don’t forget to make a spell in the witch’s cauldron on your way! Drop in any time between 11am and 3pm to start your trail.
