Concert for Syria
The response to the Easter Monday concert was quite overwhelming. On a sunny Spring afternoon the Cathedral was full to overflowing, the support and enthusiasm of so many people creating a remarkable spirit of communal solidarity and concern.
The programme was a reflection of the varied musical talent within our local musical scene - folk singers, choral groups, small pipes, Gaelic songs, Scottish fiddle music, Schubert piano duet and even vintage pop songs! Kenneth Steven's powerful poems completed the mix, and at the end audience and performers rose to sing with heart and soul a song specially composed for the occasion.
We also had a moving account from Dr Denis Rutovitz, Chairman of Edinburgh Direct Aid, of his recent visit to a Syrian refugee camp in Lebanon, of how EDA is providing vital supplies for desperate people, as well as much needed educational facilities for children.
The amount raised in donations at the door was some £3700. With one or two cheques received later we were told that, with gift aid added on, the total would amount to about £4,500. Imagine our surprise to have now received this message from Dr Rutovitz.
“One of those who attended has sent in an additional and very large cheque, bringing the total of concert-associated donations to over £20,000. We will see if we can name the next school we build, The Dunkeld School.”
That indeed would be a wonderful reminder of a very special day.
With warmest thanks to our performers and to all of you who came to the concert and gave so generously.
