Friends of the Birnam Oak
Promoting the conservation and preservation of the historic Birnam Oak and Birnam Sycamore through awareness raising and fundraising.
Friends of the Birnam Oak (FoBO) recently enjoyed a fascinating and informative one-day course on Valuing and Managing Veteran Trees. Designed by the Veteran Tree Project and delivered by Adam Riedi of The Ancient Tree Forum, the content was tailored for the local group to help bring a deeper understanding of the life cycle of trees, their importance to local wildlife and eco-systems, and how vital it is to ensure veteran and ancient trees are looked after using appropriate methods. Participants also learned about reading various features of veteran trees, and applied this at a site visit to the Birnam Oak and the Birnam Sycamore which formed part of the course. "It was a superb course, and really exceeded all our expectations," said Alison Campbell of FoBO. "We are immensely grateful to Adam and the Ancient Tree Forum, and of course to Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust who funded and organised the day." If you would like to find out more about the Friends of Birnam Oak, their work and upcoming events, you can find information on their Facebook page.
Friends of the Birnam Oak are holding an exhibition and sale of creative works inspired by the Birnam Oak and/or the Birnam Sycamore. The exhibition will be in the gallery space at the Birnam Arts Centre for the whole of September 2017.
We are particularly interested in showing and promoting works by Perthshire artists of all mediums. However, as the Birnam Oak attracts worldwide interest we will consider all enquiries. We also have access to some wood (and lichen) which was pruned from the Oak in June 2016. If you are interested in using some of this for your artwork, please get in touch. Artists who are interested in taking part should contact us initially via email at email@example.com Closing date for applications is Friday 30th June 2017 Selling fees/commission explained on enquiry https://www.facebook.com/friends.birnamoak/
