Gien a Haund - Providing Support To Older People
The Festive period has seen a number of requests for help, some relating to the weather and some to more simple challenges - like fixing computers. On the IT front, we now have a few IT savvy volunteers. Alex has managed to fix a neighbour’s tablet, while Alison and Eve can provide help around getting the best from your computer - such as ordering repeat prescriptions.
We’ve taken a few lunches out to Lunch Club members unable to get to the Club because of ill health and we’re starting to look at the demand for occasional hot meals for older people in the community. If there is a demand, we’ll also be looking for volunteers for this!
You may also have seen posters in some of the local shops, bus stations and the Surgery looking for volunteers to provide occasional help - picking up a prescription or shopping and the like. We’re working with the Craigvinean Drivers Group on this one, to expand the range of support which, collectively, we’re able to provide. We’ve already had our first response to this campaign, but we really need more folk to come forward if it is to fly.
Perhaps our biggest growth area though has been that of Befriending. More older people are telling us they would like someone to visit them - although so far, we’ve just about kept up with demand. As more of us live longer, but further away from our children, so more of us will come to rely on the companionship of people other than our immediate family. So we’ll need to rely on each other. The need for people willing to commit an hour or so of their time on a regular basis is only going to grow.
If you could spare an hour every week or so and are interested in becoming a Befriender, please Contact email@example.com
If you’re not able to make a regular commitment, but would still be interested in helping our older residents when you can, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
