Gien a Haund (Giving a hand) to older people
Just over 6 months ago we held our first meeting in response to:
1. A growing population of older people in our community
2. Restrictions on the Health and Social Care budgets to meet their needs
3. Evidence that, in stronger communities, older people enjoy a better quality of life
4. A desire to make Dunkeld and Birnam a really strong community. We now have 2 Befriending links in place with 3 more underway. Our take-out service for those unable to attend the Duchess Anne lunch club has started.
Discussions are also ongoing with one or two local shops regarding the introduction of "Accounts" for older customers - linked to a voluntary home shopping delivery service. And our first communication with Scotrail/Abellio regarding access to trains for the elderly is ready for dispatch. As important though, we now have a much better idea of what local people think are some of the remaining gaps in support. In this context, we're delighted to welcome Alex on board - in response to last month's piece in The Bridge. He mentioned he had some skills in IT. Within a week he received his first request for help ...and solved the problem.
The survey tells us we need more people like Alex. People who can't perhaps take on a regular commitment, but who nonetheless are willing to help someone with a particular challenge. So if you have a little time to spare and would be willing to provide occasional help with – transporting someone to an appointment or pick up their shopping; helping them switch energy supplier; clearing snow from their path; or helping them to decide which Cleaner/Gardener /Carer to employ ; we need you ! Oh and, of course, anyone like Alex who is comfortable around computers and their difficult behaviour.
