If you’ve been in Birnam Arts after Zumba on a Monday evening, you might have been wondering where the blethering, hammering and laughing is coming from...
Every Monday evening, from 7.30-9.30pm, the Arts Workshop becomes a space for folk to get together, share skills, ideas and get stuck into all sorts of up-cycling projects.
Masses of old curtains, furniture, lamps, lampshades, glasses and mirrors that have been rescued from clear outs are being recycled into useful material for community projects. More than £100.00 was raised last Christmas for UNICEF by selling cushions and bags from unused material that has been donated to the group.
In line with a School priority to enhance the enjoyment of reading, the group have now made cushions, bags, bunting and curtains for a Book Shed at the School nursery. The School Library has had a bundle of new cushions and bunting made to brighten up and make their reading space more comfy and fun.
New bunting for our local library was made to add colour to their brilliant open day. And at School, all the children are now able to enjoy a pop-up reading space every week outside on recycled carpet squares and outdoor cushions.
Older children have been decorating new fabric book bags (made up blank with ribbon ties by Up-Cycling Group) so that they can be used as borrow bags from the School library with a book, toy and game in each.
During Dunkeld & Birnam Unplugged, there will be two new free skills sessions on offer. One on Make’n’Mend with Roobido from Pitlochry where you can learn basic skills, like putting in a zip and make a simple item. A taster session on Up-Cycling Furniture will be offered too, where you can get a chance to see and try out a few new techniques. Both will lead to classes being offered for subsidised prices over the autumn/winter. The Up-Cycling Group was established after Dunkeld & Birnam Unplugged sessions last year, it is free and open to anyone interested to get involved.
If you might be interested in getting involved with the Upcycling Group or to book a place on one of these sessions or follow up classes, contact Jess on: email@example.com
