Thought for the Month
We hope that in this new year our long vacancy at St. Mary’s may be coming to an end.
Whatever our trials and tribulations we have at no time felt deserted by our fellow citizens in Dunkeld & Birnam of whatever congregation (or none) and emerge able to open our door to a new rector.
And while “the cat’s away” the local mice have been very busy moving all our church documents from their entirely unsuitable accommodation in the seldom heated church to the controlled environment of the Community Archive where we hope they will be available to all – as never before.
Two gems worth mentioning are St. Mary’s Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths 1860-1993 (almost from the beginning of our history!) – handwritten but mostly legible and, secondly, pages of Church Magazines. These are edited by the rector of the day, published almost monthly from July 1901 to October 1925, some machine-printed and some by hand but copied on a cyclostyle.
Those written in the days of WW1 are possibly the most enlightening when frankly local knowledge is scarce. They show the prayers of spiritual support for members of the community in the conflict, the challenges of the small congregation coming to terms with the loss of members, as well as lighter moments of social events. Come and read, mark, learn and inwardly digest!
By the time you see this they will be on their new shelf and we hope you will henceforth regard them as part of the history of the whole community and not just that of what used to be called “The English Church”, just as St Marys is open to the whole community at any time.
