Recreation Club Engage in Community Consultation on Future
Dunkeld and Birnam Recreation Club is starting a consultation on how the community would like to see the land and facilities at the recreation club developed in the coming years. The club is charitably constituted ‘to provide, maintain and administer facilities including grounds and buildings for the purpose of recreation and leisure-time occupation in the interests of social welfare and sport in the village of Dunkeld & Birnam and the immediate neighbourhood.’ The Club currently has the tennis and bowling club as member organisations. In addition, a variety of other groups including Dunkeld AFC and the ladies football team and ad hoc events such as the McRae Rally, use the facilities in conjunction with the neighbouring playing fields (which are currently leased to Perth and Kinross Council). Conversations will include talking with the Leisure Group on all the ideas they have developed for a sports hall. We will also talk to groups who have developed facilities in other communities.
If you have any ideas or would like one of the committee to come and talk to your organisation or group please contact the Secretary, Sally Robertson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The consultation will run until the end of year with any proposals being put in front of the membership of the Club at the AGM in March.

BSYFC Celebrate 10 years!
Breadalbane and Strathtay Youth Football Club (BSYFC) celebrated their 10th birthday in style with a community fun day in Aberfeldy on the 18th August. BSYFC covers a wide area of Highland Perthshire attracting boys and girls from the likes of Blair Atholl, Pitlochry, Kenmore, Aberfeldy and Dunkeld & Birnam as well as the surrounding hills and glens.
The 10 years have passed quickly - in that time, thanks to the support and dedication of volunteer coaches, officials, sponsors and parents, the club has grown to over 130 players. The club is now represented from P1 through to S3 age groups and is proud to promote inclusion, fair play and positive coaching. The club achieved SFA ‘Quality Mark’ status in 2007, was voted Scotland’s ‘Community Club of the Year’ in 2008 and then in 2015 the BSYFC 2001s lifted the club’s first silverware. There has been significant investment in coaching education across the club, which has helped players maximise both their potential and enjoyment of the game. This focus on coaching has continued to this day with the club enjoying dedicated support from St Johnstone coach Danny Griffin under the SFA McDonalds programme.
The 10-year celebrations included a mini football festival which welcomed teams from the surrounding area. The event was open to all comers, not only to watch the football, but there was also plenty of other activities going on including ‘Beat The
Goalie’ and ‘Target’ competitions, face painting, a bouncy castle, a BBQ and a variety of stalls to browse through. The day was also an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the clubs support for a project to install a fresh water bore hole in the Malawian village of Engucwini saving villagers a 14km round trip!

Rugby: Ospreys - Blue on Blue : Blairgowrie v Dunkeld
On the 12th of August Blairgowrie RFC held their 22nd10-a-side rugby tournament.
In recent years this long-standing annual event has been combined with the local Ale Festival. The combination of fast-paced rugby and a large range of craft beers and ciders draws a large crowd from Blair and further afield.
The opening match was a 15-a-side game between Dunkeld and Blairgowrie veterans.
As most players on both teams had at some point played for Dunkeld Ospreys, familiarity meant that the match was played in good spirit although no quarter was given. The home side led in the first half during which Dunkeld struggled to get to grips with the laws of rucking and conceded far too many penalties. After a spirited half-time discussion and a change of tactics, Dunkeld emerged the stronger team in the 2nd half. However, it still wasn't enough to claw back the 3 tries conceded in the first half and Blairgowrie won the entertaining match by the odd try.
This being the opening match, it gave all players from both sides the opportunity to enjoy the 10s tournament and the skills and pace of the younger teams. The beer and food tents were also well-frequented during the rest of the day. Congratulations go to Blairgowrie, not just for winning the veterans match but also in retaining the 10s tournament cup.
Dunkeld have more games in the diary throughout the autumn as well as a tour to Tenerife planned in May 2018.
Dunkeld Ospreys is an over 35s rugby team. Further information at www.facebook.com/dunkeldrugby or from email@example.com

Dunkeld & Birnam Veteran Football
On 18 August, a hearty squad of Dunkeld & Birnam veteran (mostly) footballers headed the short distance for an 11-a-side friendly against counterparts from Aberfeldy.
Given most of the home squad had either never played 11-a-sides, or had not done for some time, this was a great test for a bunch of players more used to a kick-about on a Friday night at the Recreation Ground.
Bolstered by strips kindly donated by Dale Montana, Dunkeld & Birnam team took the lead with a shot from outside the box from Dale himself, only for this to be cancelled out by a second half header from Aberfeldy.
A disputed penalty saw the spoils (and trophy) go to Aberfeldy. Most importantly the match was played in a great spirit, with agreement to do it all again in Birnam next month.

Highland Perthshire Ladies Football Club
Highland Perthshire Ladies Football Club welcomes any new players in the area who would like to join us for training and games on Wednesday evenings from 6.15pm at the Recreation Ground in Birnam.
We are an informal team of all ages and abilities and enjoy getting together for a kick about on a (usually) sunny evening. Some of us had barely kicked a ball before joining (and still struggle with this on occasion!) others would not look out of place in the national team!
We also have players from all over the globe joining us at the moment with Denmark, Hungary, Scotland, England, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Namibia, Ireland, South Korea, and Germany all represented. We were fortunate to receive fantastic coaching from Terry Young, Joel Jameson and Jamie Beazley; the team would like to thank them all for giving up their time each week and getting us started. We are now thrilled to have new coach, John Quigley, putting us through our paces every Wednesday.
HPLFC have played Comrie womens team a couple of times (3-1 Home, 1-3 Away, decider match to be arranged!) and would love to organise more games. We would also like to keep the momentum up throughout the year and need enough people playing to help set up our floodlights in the winter months.
We are particularly grateful to SSE and the Community Coucil for providing the funding for floodlights, strips and footballs.
Please pop along any Wednesday to give it a go, don't worry if you have never played before! Visit our facebook page and/or call 07999 585732 to be added to our whatsapp group and keep up to date with our weekly plans.

Ospreys Take Flight to Portugal
Spring has been a busy time for Dunkeld's veterans' rugby team. As reported last month, March saw the team make a successful short trip through to Crieff.
In April the oldies ventured further afield and took part in the Torneio Rugby Veteranos in Evora in Portugal. For a country not widely-known for its rugby the day-long tournament had an amazing turn-out of more than 150 players. Dunkeld were the only
non-Portuguese team invited and were entertained wonderfully by the hosts. The standard of rugby was high, particularly amongst the fast, talented backs of the local teams. So high, indeed, that The Ospreys experienced a couple of rare defeats. Of the 3 matches played, Dunkeld won the 2nd match but were beaten in the first and last. The postmatch camaraderie was enlivened by the great weather, outdoor bars and the bagpipes of scrumhalf "Pistol" Pete Bruce. The celebrations continued into the small hours at the evening reception and dinner which took place in the old town of Evora. Plans are already being made to return next year and we hope to attend with a larger and stronger team.
Into May...on the 6th, a full squad of 20 players travelled to Aberdeenshire for the 9th Scottish Golden Oldies tournament in Ellon. This was The Ospreys' 3rd appearance at the national tournament and their most successful yet. A return to winning form saw Dunkeld prevail in all 3 of their matches by convincing margins.
In June, on the 17th, we will be taking part in the inaugural Carnoustie Beach Rugby tournament. Weather permitting, this should be a great day out for players and families.
The intention is to lay on a bus for players and supporters from Dunkeld and Birnam.
Anyone who is interested in playing in this tournament, or any matches in the future please contact email@example.com and have a look at www.facebook.com/dunkeldrugby

The first ride of the series starts from Tiso’s carpark Inveralmond and will go round the Perth Circular cycle route. Following a tried and tested format, the rides are designed to take around an hour and a half to complete, all starting at 6.30pm. Rides are leisurely and companionable. The appointed tail rider will support those at the back, while those at the front can have a blether as the pack reassembles. Highland Perthshire Clay Shooting Club
We rang the changes at the clubs last shooting event. Instead of our usual competition shooting a “Compact” was the name of the game. Until a year ago I had no idea what this competition was. Each of the five participants stand in individual open fronted cubicles. The cubicles are formed up side by side facing the target area. Each cubicle is designed to restrict the participant’s arc of fire so that everyone is safe and sound. In front of each cubical and standing at ground level is a notice board. On each is written a sequence of letters. Each notice board has a different sequence of letters. Targets are released according to the sequence. Each participant takes his or her turn to shoot their sequence of targets. On the participant saying “pull” one or two targets are released from the trap high into the air. Some targets are released “on report” that is to say, once the participant has shot at the first target the second target is released. The final two targets of the sequence are released simultaneously. Once all participants have completed shooting at their particular sequence every one moves on to the next cubical. Oh dear I hope you are still with me on all this?
Before losing the plot please spare a thought for the poor people having to release the targets and keep the scores! I released the targets!
Please ring me, Ted on 07821940252 if you want to join us on one of our shooting events.
