Ospreys Looking Forward to Resuming Regular Monthly Fixtures
After the disappointment of the cancelled pre-Christmas match (frozen pitch) in Edinburgh (and the associated night out), a number of the team took part in the Blairgowrie Boxing Day match. This was for all ages 18+ and the speed at which the match was played certainly helped some of the older players blow away a few cobwebs.
The first match of 2018 is going to be on the 3rd of March v Brechin BRUCE at Blairgowrie.
24th of March against Cartha in Glasgow.
5th May, Scottish Golden Oldies, Aberdeen
26/27 May, Tenerife Tens
The Tenerife tournament is 10-a-side over 35s rugby. There are still places available in the team. Let us know if you're interested and further details will be supplied.
There is also information on www.facebook.com/dunkeldrugby and a WhatsApp group (email phone number if you want included).
New players are always welcome. Contact email@example.com

The 6th Annual Dunkeld Enduro!
In 2018 Highland Perthshire Cycling brings you…
The 6th annual Dunkeld Enduro!
(yes entries are now open!)
We can't believe we're now on to our 6th Dunkeld Enduro! So, first things first, a big thank you to everyone who has helped and ridden over the past 6 years!
Here are the details for 2018 and most importantly, how to enter - 6th annual Dunkeld Enduro mountain bike event takes place on the Saturday 28th April 2018 and will continue the trend of providing the best tracks in the Dunkeld area as well as introducing some new surprises. We have some great stage ideas up our sleeve but still need to work out the details (and/or build them!) so we can't release any hints just yet! The level of difficulty will remain the same (it's Dunkeld but it's designed with mere mortals not pros in mind).
Highland Perthshire Cycling's Event Organiser Kat Brown explains why she loves this event so much. “For me the Dunkeld Enduro is not just about a 1 day blind race, it's about developing an area, creating sport where it wasn't before and seeing how happy the trails make people. I'm lucky enough to see, and hear, riders whooping and hollering as they come down the Mast or the Rudder from my garden and to see the kids in my street rush around on their bikes excitedly talking about the trails. The Dunkeld Enduro gives our dedicated trail building crew a reason to make amazing trails and brings new life into the villages.”
Event details -Saturday 28th April 2018
To enter - https://www.sientries.co.uk/event.php?elid=Y&event_id=4137
Event HQ: Dunkeld. Event Registration: 8.30am - 10:30am
Event Start: 9:30am - 11am (Riders once registered can set off from the start at any time between 9:30am and 11am)
Please note, this event is for intermediate to advanced mountain bikers who have experience of riding downhill singletrack trails. If you are not sure if this event is for you pop into Progression Bikes, Dunkeld and have a chat and try a few trails in the area for practice.

Fair City Enduro Confirmed as Scotland’s Only Enduro World Series Qualifier
Muckmedden Events, organisers of “Muckin’ Good” mountain bike events, are delighted to announce that their Fair City Enduro mountain bike race will be an Enduro World Series (EWS) qualifier event in 2018. There are 50 official EWS Qualifiers spread across 25 countries and four continents in 2018 and Fair City Enduro is the only event staged in Scotland. The sixth annual fancy-dress mountain bike race, which will be held in the ‘Fair City’ of Perth, Scotland, on 27 October 2018, is now widely regarded as one of the top mountain bike Enduros in the UK, thanks to a mix of world class mountain biking and some truly outlandish outfits.
Enduro is the fastest growing discipline in mountain bike racing, currently attracting big budget factory racing teams and high-profile riders and generating a huge amount of media attention globally. It is testament to the growing reputation of Perthshire-based Muckmedden Events that Fair City Enduro was selected as one of an exclusive group of Qualifier Events for the 2019 Enduro World Series. D and B District Leisure Group – the Sports Hall project
The 2017 AGM was held at Birnam Arts on 12th December. The Chairman Kevin Lancaster thanked all the committee members for their work over the past year. He reported on discussions with the Recreation Club, which is consulting in the community about its future planning; this has revived hopes that an indoor sports facility might still be a realisable possibility. He also reported on the continuation of the annual award to the Royal School of Dunkeld in memory of Robbie Melvin, including the Citizenship Trophy.
The Treasurer Margaret Scott presented the annual accounts which were approved, and Bill Nicoll was thanked for his work as auditor and was reappointed. (The accounts are available from the Secretary on request.) Future fundraising and publicity were discussed, including having a stall at the Birnam Games on 25th August.
The following office bearers were elected: Chair: Kevin Lancaster, Vice Chair: Graham Rees, Treasurer: Margaret Scott, Secretary: Alasdair Wylie, Minutes Secretary: Andrea Cox, Committee Members: Peter Guthrie, Bill Wright, Adam Flint.
It was agreed that the 2018 AGM will be held earlier, on 13th September. The next Committee Meeting will be on 20th February.
The Secretary Alasdair Wylie reported on contact with Kirsteen Ross, Community Sports Hub Co-ordinator at Live Active Leisure who has shown a keen interest in possibilities in Dunkeld and Birnam. The Chair closed the AGM with thanks to all for attending, and there followed a productive discussion with Stuart Paton, Chair of the Recreation Club and with David and Lorna Tripney of the Tennis Club about future plans.
If you would like more information about the Leisure Group and plans for an indoor sports facility, please contact the Secretary, Alasdair Wylie on 01350 727361 or: firstname.lastname@example.org

New Path and Bike Pump Track at Royal School of Dunkeld
The school is pleased to announce a very exciting new development in the playground. We have just completed the construction of an all weather multi-purpose path and bike pump track. The children, teachers and playground staff were actively involved in the planning of the path and have loved watching it being built. The path loops round the grass playing field and has a number of features, imaginatively named as the ‘electric eel, ‘up and down’, ’sleeping rhinos’ and stumpy doughnuts’- come and have a look to see what these are!
The track will be officially open in early December with a special ‘ride to school day’ and breakfast. The path will be used by the children to walk, run and play on every day at breaks and for the Daily Mile. The school plans to run clubs and are currently working with Sustrans on a really exciting initiative to train the children in safe and responsible cycling.
The school welcomes supervised use of the path by families, small groups and individuals from the community outside school hours when it is not being used by the school. This is under the strict understanding that it is entirely at the users’ own risk, is not the responsibility of the school, and is subject to review. There are notice boards beside the path explaining the various features and safety rules. Groups wanting to use the path must contact the school to make arrangements, as is the case for all Perth and Kinross playgrounds.
We are very grateful for the financial support of SSE Griffin Community Award, Awards for All and the school Parent Partnership Group. The path and bike features were planned and constructed by Collective Trax, who have done a fantastic job of working with the children and school staff to create a great asset for the school. We are planning further improvements to the school grounds in the coming months so look out for those!

On Friday 29th September the Royal School of Dunkeld again remembered former pupil Robbie Melvin who died in a tragic accident in 2005. Robbie's mother Kate and brother Stuart visited the school to present a cheque for £300 towards sports and recreation equipment for the school. This money comes from the huge fundraising done by Kate, her family and many local friends in Robbie’s memory towards the building of an indoor sports hall locally.
House Captains Eliza McDonald and Roddy Campbell are shown receiving the cheque from Kate and Stuart, along with acting Head Teacher Julie Menzies. Each year a cup for “good citizenship “is also given in Robbie’s memory and this year it was awarded to Molly Gauld, now at Breadalbane Academy.
Anyone who would like to learn more about the sports hall project is welcome to contact Alasdair Wylie, Secretary, Dunkeld and Birnam District Leisure Group on 01350 727361 or firstname.lastname@example.org

Dunkeld and Birnam Bowling Club
Another has season ended, where does the time go? It has been an enjoyable season with a mix of outside competitions and club championships. Members continue to enjoy Club nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays with a mixture of friendly matches and competitions at weekends.
We traditionally close the green with a club competition and this year was no exception. The afternoon was played in a friendly yet competitive atmosphere, rounded off by tea and the presentation of the trophies.
This year our Ladies Champion was Gael Shaw and our Men’s Champion was Ronnie Duffie.
The bowling green will be put to bed until next April, but meantime, the indoor carpet comes out. Short Mat Bowls is played every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 7pm.
You don’t need to be a member of the bowling club to play. All we ask is a £10 fee to cover the entire six month winter season. That is approximately £1.65 per month!

Recreation Club Engage in Community Consultation on Future
Dunkeld and Birnam Recreation Club is starting a consultation on how the community would like to see the land and facilities at the recreation club developed in the coming years. The club is charitably constituted ‘to provide, maintain and administer facilities including grounds and buildings for the purpose of recreation and leisure-time occupation in the interests of social welfare and sport in the village of Dunkeld & Birnam and the immediate neighbourhood.’ The Club currently has the tennis and bowling club as member organisations. In addition, a variety of other groups including Dunkeld AFC and the ladies football team and ad hoc events such as the McRae Rally, use the facilities in conjunction with the neighbouring playing fields (which are currently leased to Perth and Kinross Council). Conversations will include talking with the Leisure Group on all the ideas they have developed for a sports hall. We will also talk to groups who have developed facilities in other communities.
If you have any ideas or would like one of the committee to come and talk to your organisation or group please contact the Secretary, Sally Robertson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The consultation will run until the end of year with any proposals being put in front of the membership of the Club at the AGM in March.

Dunkeld & Birnam Veteran Football
On 18 August, a hearty squad of Dunkeld & Birnam veteran (mostly) footballers headed the short distance for an 11-a-side friendly against counterparts from Aberfeldy.
Given most of the home squad had either never played 11-a-sides, or had not done for some time, this was a great test for a bunch of players more used to a kick-about on a Friday night at the Recreation Ground.
Bolstered by strips kindly donated by Dale Montana, Dunkeld & Birnam team took the lead with a shot from outside the box from Dale himself, only for this to be cancelled out by a second half header from Aberfeldy.
A disputed penalty saw the spoils (and trophy) go to Aberfeldy. Most importantly the match was played in a great spirit, with agreement to do it all again in Birnam next month.

Highland Perthshire Ladies Football Club
Highland Perthshire Ladies Football Club welcomes any new players in the area who would like to join us for training and games on Wednesday evenings from 6.15pm at the Recreation Ground in Birnam.
We are an informal team of all ages and abilities and enjoy getting together for a kick about on a (usually) sunny evening. Some of us had barely kicked a ball before joining (and still struggle with this on occasion!) others would not look out of place in the national team!
We also have players from all over the globe joining us at the moment with Denmark, Hungary, Scotland, England, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Namibia, Ireland, South Korea, and Germany all represented. We were fortunate to receive fantastic coaching from Terry Young, Joel Jameson and Jamie Beazley; the team would like to thank them all for giving up their time each week and getting us started. We are now thrilled to have new coach, John Quigley, putting us through our paces every Wednesday.
HPLFC have played Comrie womens team a couple of times (3-1 Home, 1-3 Away, decider match to be arranged!) and would love to organise more games. We would also like to keep the momentum up throughout the year and need enough people playing to help set up our floodlights in the winter months.
We are particularly grateful to SSE and the Community Coucil for providing the funding for floodlights, strips and footballs.
Please pop along any Wednesday to give it a go, don't worry if you have never played before! Visit our facebook page and/or call 07999 585732 to be added to our whatsapp group and keep up to date with our weekly plans.
