Editorial

Hello all!
There seems to be a volunteering vibe going on this issue so I’m joining in and declaring volunteer of the month as … Gordon McIntosh! Well done Gordon for an astonishing fifty years serving as an elder within the parish. Think back to 1974, if you can, and reflect that since then Gordon has been volunteering in our community with thoughtfulness and good humour. On behalf of us all - thank you Gordon.
Helen Taylor reflects on her six years as a community councillor as she stands down and passes on the role to others. In her column she writes about the benefits volunteering brings not just to others but also ourselves. “Doing something different for even an hour or so maybe once a month can give you a new perspective, open up new friendships and interests, learn new skills.”
So why not take on a volunteering role in our community – you don’t need to commit yourself to the next fifty years just yet. Here are a few opportunities in this issue I’d like to highlight:
1: How about becoming a rainbow leader?
This is for someone who enjoys offering our children new opportunities and perspectives. Could that be you? Instead of putting your hand up on your own why not strong arm a couple of pals to join you in making up a super-mini team?
2: If you are over the age of 18 why not stand for election as a community councillor?
The community council covers a wide range of issues of relevance and importance to the community including planning applications and traffic and parking issues. Click here for more information about the elections that are due to take place on the 18th November and how to stand for the council. It’s important to get a diverse mix of people on the council that reflects the views of our community.
3: If you are interested in a specific issue such as affordable housing, better broadband, or the local economy pop along to Birnam Arts on 2nd October to hear what has come out of the community survey and how we can take forward the issues raised. Click here for details.
You will see here that Santa is taking a sabbatical this year from Santa Day celebrations. It is therefore up to the rest of us to ensure we keep up the ‘Christmas Cheer.’ As fans of the film ‘Elf’ will know - the best way to spread Christmas cheer is “singing loud for all to hear.” So let’s get singing as we fill up a Blythswood Shoebox and as we get ready for late-night shopping in the village on 10th December – look out for more info on that in November’s edition of The Bridge. Mentioning Elf reminds me I have promised to make myself an Elf outfit for my annual watching of that great movie ... I’d better dust down the old sewing machine and get sewing.
